Flourishing - The Sum of All Fossils (2011)

Genre: Technical Death Metal

If you like later era Gorguts (i.e. Obscura/From Wisdom to Hate), Ulcerate or other bands with that type of sound, get this immediately (yep, code red text). Not much more needs to be said.

Ólafur Arnalds - Living Room Songs (2011)

Genre: Neoclassical
Country: Iceland

Going out of the usual routine of death metal and black metal to bring some neoclassical to your attention by one of my favorite composers Ólafur Arnalds. His new EP Living Room Songs is available for FREE DOWNLOAD from his website, and I encourage all of you to give his stuff a listen. Bleak, minimalistic neoclassical that is right up my alley.

And yes, this was recorded in his living room.

Funerus - Reduced to Sludge (2011)

Genre: Death Metal
Country: United States

Pretty much everything John McEntee (long time Incantation member) has been involved in has ruled in some way or another, and this release, the second full length (first in eight years) from his project, Funerus, is no exception. This also features his wife, Jill, on vocals/bass and she sounds just as good as her hubby at spewing out guttural refuse.

Maveth - Breath of an Abomination (2011)

Genre: Death/Black Metal
Country: Finland

Rampant blackened death metal compilation from these Finnish goat slaughterers with a healthy injection of Incantation and Ignivomous influences thrown in for good measure. If you're looking for riffs, you'll find 'em here...

Prosanctus Inferi - Red Streams Of Flesh (2011)

Genre: Death/Black Metal
Country: United States

I think I actually like this better than Pandemonic Ululations of Vesperic Palpitations, which I thought was pretty damn good.

Abhorer - Zygotical Sabbatory Anabapt (1996)

Genre: Death/Black/Thrash Metal
Country: Singapore

One of the first extreme metal bands to come out of Asia, Abhorer will absolutely rip your face off with this unrelenting and merciless display of finesse. The guitar licks import death, black and thrash styles into the music while the vocal offering is a rather desperate sounding growl as if someone tuned Martin Van Drunen's vocals down an octave with several double-tracked, higher pitched howls thrown in for good measure. Complete with automatic drumming, anyone looking for a good pounding in the sensitive areas should check this out.

Coercion - Forever Dead (1997)

Genre: Death Metal
Country: Sweden

Coercion's Forever Dead is a rather under-appreciated album from the Swedish scene that came out in the mid 90's that packs everything you could really ask for into a single unit. The riffs are crunching, acidic affairs and the vox are nice and low. The final track is a 23-minute song that, despite the fact that the final half is basically just ambiance, shows the dynamic nature of this band.

Graveyard - Into the Mausoleum and One With the Dead (2008/2009)

Genre: Death Metal
Country: Spain

Some of the best Swedish-styled death metal I've heard in awhile and it comes from Spain. Blended with other styles of death metal from other countries, needless to say, on both the 2008 EP, Into the Mausoleum, and the 2009 full length, One With the Dead, Graveyard seemingly annihilates the speakers with all manner of terrific riffage (Like the one that begins "Ritual" on the EP), drums that will crush you into a pulp and viscous vocals. They also have an EP released in 2011, called The Altar of Sculpted Skulls, which I can't for the life of me find a download link. If anyone has one, it would be greatly appreciated and will be added to this post as soon as possible.

Swallowed - Swallowed (2010)

Genre: Death/Doom Metal
Country: Finland

If the words "death/doom metal" and "Finland" used in the same sentence don't excite you sexually then you are hopeless.

Bastard Priest - Ghouls of the Endless Night (2011)

Genre: Death Metal
Country: Sweden

Bastard Priest's new full length after their 2010 release, Under the Hammer of Destruction. For those of you unfamiliar with the band, they play a style of dirty old school death metal infused with a solid helping of crusty goodness (Similar to Tribulation, Repugnant, Miasmal, etc). This album is no exception and the riffs ooze with a vibe as if these guys were playing back in the late 80's and early 90's when the underground was filled with shit that would cock smack your face if you dared to approach.

Serpent Ascending - The Enigma Unsettled (2011)

Genre: Death Metal
Country: Finland

Excellent Finnish death metal from this year with an abundance of solid instrumental work including some tearing, cleaving riffs and while the production is a bit flat, they sound adequate. Vocally, the album is classic Finnish material, consisting of cavernous, bowel-churning gutturals which add into the trademark low-end that death metal from this particular country is known for.

Ygg - Ygg (2011)

Genre: Atmospheric/Pagan Black Metal
Country: Ukraine

Ukraine has some seriously good black metal, and Ygg continue that tradition with some well-produced atmospheric black metal with nice, howling vocals and an altogether grim atmosphere and a large handful of heavy, winding riffs. A promising debut album. Krieg.
