Falls Of Rauros - The Light That Dwells In Rotten Wood (2011)

Genre: Atmospheric/Folk Black Metal
Country: United States

It's always surprised me how little black metal comes from northern New England. I've lived here all my life and have always thought that it would provide the perfect stage for a sort of counterpart to the Cascadian black metal sound from the geographically opposite side of the country. There is one band, though, that puts into practice what I've been thinking all this time. Falls Of Rauros have already put out several releases, and with each one they evolve their sound. Featuring Austin Lundr of Panopticon on drums (he is a good friend of the band) and some excellent acoustic and electric riffs to be had this is exactly what this region needs. More bands in northern New Hampshire, Maine and Vermont need to take cues from what is going on here and showcase the fact that what our region offers for inspiration can easily rival anything else going on across the country.

As of now, The Light That Dwells In Rotten Wood is available for stream here, and available for purchase here.

Sunn O))) & Boris - Altar (2006)

Genre: Drone/Doom Metal
Country: United States/Japan

A collaboration between two excellent bands produces, you guessed it, and excellent album that brings out the best of both acts on one production. The album flows unusually well (probably due to Boris' influence) and the sublime likes of "The Sinking Belle (Blue Sheep)" is nothing short of wonderful to experience.

Iniquity - Serenadium (1996)

Genre: Death Metal
Country: Denmark

Hard to deny the songwriting ability of these Danes who churn out more than their fair share of awesome riffs both crushing and memorable. Couple that with excellent vocals that throw around several different pitches and great drumming and you have a recipe for superb death metal.

Barghest - Barghest (2011)

Genre: Black Metal
Country: United States

Quality black metal featuring a few members from Thou. Styles are completely different but that doesn't stop this from overflowing with evil riffs and all sorts of misanthropic shit that I don't really feel like talking about. Just listen to it trust me.

Doom Formation - Definition Of Evil (1995)

Genre: Death Metal
Country: United States

This 1995 demo from this Delaware, Ohio-based band is one of the most primitive, ugly and disgusting early brutal death offerings I have ever heard. This is no flashy, overplayed to the point where it hurts your ears bullshit, this is tremendously bleak, rotting Suffocation-worship at its best from the bowels of hell that will rip your insides out and feed them to you as your last meal. Hope you enjoy haggis...
