A grossly overlooked Swedish death metal release that will undoubtedly eat your children. You won't care, though, because shit is so good.

Aäkon Këëtrëh - Dans La Forêt (1996)
Genre: Dark Ambient
Country: France
Well it's not your typical minimalistic dark ambient with those weird samplings that sound like someone is elbow-deep in a vat of chicken salad searching for their car keys while the wind blows at 130 miles per hour in the background. Too bad, though, because you're going to listen to this LLN release from our friend Lord Aäkon Këëtrëh (ex-Belketre and Torgeist) and like it.

Various Artists - Whom The Moon A Nightsong Sings (2010)
Genre: Neofolk
Country: Various
Stealing the shit outta this from Jingle over at The Celestial Manifest, but I love this so much I can't help but re-post it. Incredible neofolk compilation from some of the biggest artists in the scene. But it's not their tracks that impress, it's tracks like "A Year Of Silence" by Ainulindalë and "Ich Würd Es Hören" by Nebelung that steal the show. 2 Disks, 240 MB of awesome.

Icelandic gentleman Olafur Arnalds is a brilliant composer. His piano-driven pieces are a definition of atmosphere, providing a dark but rewarding neoclassical soundscape that is all-encompassing. If you even think you'd like this, I highly recommend taking a listen.

Fauna - The Hunt (2007)
Genre: Ambient Black Metal
Country: United States
Fauna's The Hunt is a monolith. It's an 80-minute, one-track album of captivating ambient/atmospheric black metal. The buildups are immense, and it all just crashes down in the final 20 minutes. Really impressive stuff; this makes other black metal in this vein *cough*wolves in the throne room*cough* seem terrible (which they generally are). Good shit if you feel like sitting through it.

Brutality - Screams Of Anguish (1993)

A forgotten death metal classic which everyone should hear. A mix of awesome old-school death metal with a heap of melody all entwined around a handful of well-played instrumentals. Simply everything about this record is pure brilliance, from the riffs to the vocals to the drums to the atmosphere, this is what I think of when I think about quality death metal.

The Morningside - The Wind, The Trees, And The Shadows Of The Past (2007)
Genre: Melodic Death/Doom Metal
Country: Russia
An interesting display of a style not unlike that of Agalloch, Russian band The Morningside focus on slow, highly melodic guitar leads and a depressed atmosphere to keep the listener simply immersed in every song. It's a shame that many people overlook this album, because otherwise this album would have a much larger following. If you want a simpler form of what Agalloch perform, with the same amount of potency, then look no further.

Empyrium - Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields (1997)
Genre: Symphonic Folk Metal
Country: Germany
The style of music displayed on Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields is quite unique. It's a combination of dark metal, folk metal, and symphonic black metal which, when put into a finished product, is utterly entrancing. Later in their career, Empyrium's sound shifted to Neofolk, but in the early era of the band, Songs Of Moors And Misty Fields is by far my favorite release. A very interesting and captivating listen.

Garden Of Shadows - Oracle Moon (2000)
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Country: United States
Oracle Moon is, bar none, the best melodic death metal album to come out of the United States. It combines slight hints of progressive death metal with a seemingly endless plethora of melodies and leads which are downright brilliant. Seven tracks of ecstasy for those out there who enjoy their death metal really melodic and absolutely loaded with atmosphere. This is one which won't be replicated. Ever.

A Forest Of Stars - The Corpse Of Rebirth (2008)
Genre: Atmospheric Black Metal

A fantastic concept album surrounding the creation story from this relatively new band from the UK. The vocals might take some getting used to, being of the high-pitched, wailing SDBM flavour, but the music here will grow like a motherfucking bean stalk.

Estatic Fear - A Sombre Dance (1999)
Genre: Symphonic/Melodic Doom/Death Metal
Country: Austria
Putting a genre to this is album is quite simply impossible. A wonderful combination of symphonic doom metal with loads of melody and a bit of a death metal tinge to it. Angelic female vocals and awesome harsh vocals which sound quite a bit like Mirrorthrone. Except this isn't a waste of time. Just a fantastic and mesmerizing record which flies amazingly under the radar.

Behemoth - And The Forests Dream Eternally (1994)
Genre: Black Metal
Country: Poland
Yeah, I know, I don't believe it either. Behemoth actually put out an album which warrants more than one listen. Pretty insane, but with 1994's And The Forests Dream Eternally Behemoth bring a slew of good riffs and a whole lot of Bathory tribute to what I consider to be their best release. Fuck that blackened death metal shit they spew out today, this is where Behemoth should of stayed.

Darkthrone - Panzerfaust (1995)
Genre: Black Metal
Country: Norway
Besides having the most kvlt album art ever the music is pretty krieg, especially when you consider how grim the atmosphere is and how the morbid guitars buzz around in the dark, ominous production before proceeding to deliver an unholy load onto your face. But don't worry, it will blend right in with that corpsepaint you're wearing.
